It’s New Music Friday and I’m really excited about the releases this week. So let’s cut the small talk and get to it. Check out new releases from the following artists:
- Beach Bunny – The follow up EP to 2020’s awesome full-length debut is darker in subject matter while still brimming with the energy that helped drive their debut. Beach Bunny is building a really solid library of songs. Check out the track “Good Girls (Don’t Get Used)”
- Matthew Sweet – One of power-pop’s greatest is back with 12 guitar-driven songs that he produced and played all the instruments on. Diving into darker subject matters feels more like some of his earlier work. Check out the track “Stars Explode”
- Shame – A raucous return from the British post-punk band that shows great growth on their follow up from their really great 2018 album. Check out the track “Water in the Well”
- ZAYN – The former member of One Direction named his new album Nobody Is Listening. An early listen makes me think that won’t be the case. This is full of sexy, R&B tracks where ZAYN had total control of what went into this new release. Check out the track “Better”
- Grandbrothers – The German duo effortlessly combine piano and electronics in their stunning latest release. It’s headphone worthy when you need to escape this extended 2020. Check out the track “What We See”
- Pearl Charles – Some of my favorite music of 2020 was new artists adopting the Laurel Canyon sound. Pearl Charles is right there with them, with her sophomore release. Acoustic sounds flecked with gentle synth back mature lyrics. Check out the track “Take Your Time”
Today’s featured artist: Midnight Sister
A Los Angeles-based duo who create atmospheric pop music while mixing in strings, horns and lounge - with a flair for the cinematic drama thrown in for good measure (they did score a recent documentary). It’d fit nicely into a David Lynch or PT Anderson film. Lead singer Juliana Giraffe’s deep voice draws you in through each story telling line she sings.
