It’s New Music Friday – Time for the Picks of the Week – a song and an album that have caught my attention and something I think you’ll want to listen to this weekend. So let’s get to it…
Today’s featured single is “Spirit Power and Soul” by Johnny Marr
The former guitarist from The Smiths has carved a really nice solo career. He describes the lead single off his upcoming release as “an electro soul anthem” – pretty accurate as the mix between his still-incredible guitar playing and the pulsing beat (reminiscent of New Order) will get your heart pumping.
Today’s featured album is Sometimes I Might Be Introvert by Little Simz
New to me but already on her fourth album, the UK rapper impresses with a burst of crazy beats, orchestral sounds and rapping that is strong. The new music centers around the wrestling between her public persona and private self. The songs tip their hat to the ones who came before her – Lauryn Hill and Kendrick Lamar come to mind – The lyrics are deep and the music ranges from movie soundtrack to pop music. The focus on rap artists from England has been spotty here in the U.S. but maybe Little Simz is the ambassador we all need to listen to. Check out my favorite track “Introvert”.
