September 11th – I remember where I was on this day 19 years ago. I remember the days after. The uncertainty of everything. One thing that helped me through my anxiety around the attacks and the aftermath was music.
So today, on this New Music Friday, I hope you find something that moves you – to dance, to sing, to laugh or to cry. Let’s get to it:
Check out new music from:
- Lo Tom – Lead by David Bazan’s (Pedro the Lion) deep vocals (both in lyrics and range) the guitar heavy band shines with their latest. Check out the track “The Show”
- Youngboy Never Broke Again – The 20-year old American rap artist is joined by Lil Wayne and Snoop Dog on his 21-track new release. Check out the track “My Window”
- Mickey Guyton – A welcomed EP from one of the best country singers around, Guyton has the talent to take it to the next level. Check out the track “Bridges”
- Rita Indiana - Ending a decade-long self-imposed exile from the music industry, Dominican singer-songwriter Rita Indiana has returned with a fantastic new album. Check out the track “Ensalmo”
- Waylon Payne – The country crooner’s new album is classic and tender. Check out the track “Dead on a Wheel”
- Elizabeth Cook – A confessional second release from the Nashville-based singer whose range in vocals and emotion is tremendous. Check out the track “When She Comes”
- The Flaming Lips – On The Lips 16th release, the band finds their natural psychedelic groove with a hint of country. Check out the track “Dinosaurs on the Mountain”
- Doves – The Manchester, England’s comeback album is fresh with a mix of cool beats, melodies and a hint of classic shoegazing. Check out the track “Broken Eyes”
- Delta Spirit – The California rock band stays true to their rootsy sound while sounding fresh and new in a world full of rock bands. Check out the track “It Ain’t Easy”
- Conway the Machine – The Buffalo-based rapper new release is his third of four releases this year. It’s powerful and shows great growth from his previous releases. Check out the track “Anza”
Today’s featured artist is a new one to me – Asaf Avidan, the Israeli singer whose voice is so fresh, original and unusual. I was drawn in by how he weaves genres like a painter blends colors. There’s hints of jazz with pop and touches of R&B. It’s tough to pin him down – it’s just worth listening to the whole of his new release Anagnorisis. Start with the track “900 Days”
