New Music Friday - 8/13/21

It’s New Music Friday – Time for the Picks of the Week – a song and an album that have caught my attention and something I think you’ll want to listen to this weekend. So let’s get to it…

Today’s featured single is “I’ll Get By” by The Lathums

A melodic, “jangle-pop” track from the quartet that calls Wigan home (large town in Greater Manchester, England) – and the Manchester influence is certainly there. You’ll hear shades of Johnny Marr’s guitar as well as the up-tempo feel of The Housemartins. Their full-length release, “How Beautiful Life Can Be” comes out in September, so enjoy this two and a half minute summery song to tide you over until the Fall. I expect great things from these lads.

Today’s featured album is Pressure Machine from The Killers

After decades of loud, thrilling, booming music, The Killers deliver a scaled back (for them), contemplative album that finds frontman Brandon Flowers reflecting on his past and his formative years growing up in rural Utah. He spent the past year and a half of isolation deep in thought and poured out lyrics from that time into the band's most stirring album to date. It’s drawing early comparisons to Springsteen’s Nebraska, an album recorded during his golden period. There are signs of early Killers, but the storytelling makes this one different and one of, if not, their best. Check out my favorite track “Runaway Horses” featuring Phoebe Bridgers.
