It's New Music Friday! It's too hot to go outside so why not cool down with these hot new releases.
Check out new music from:
Liza Anna - an American folk musician from Saint Simons Island, Georgia;
Jess Cornelius - a New Zealand-born singer-songwriter and musician formerly from the band Teeth & Tongue;
Courtney Marie Andrews - an American singer-songwriter originally from Phoenix, Arizona;
Kamaal Williams – a London jazz musician whose latest stakes out a middle ground between spiritual fire and smooth jazz;
The Naked and the Famous - an indie electronic band from Auckland, New Zealand, formed in 2007.
Today I’m shaking it up a bit. I’ve got two featured releases.
The first is the new one from Taylor Swift who about 16 hours ago, told us all she was putting out a new album. It’s called “folklore” and it’s quite the departure from her previous two albums, “Lover” and “Reputation”. Swift worked on the record with the National’s Aaron Dessner (who co-wrote or produced 11 of folklore’s 16 songs), Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff (who produced last week’s featured release from The Chicks). The toned-down effort and in Swift’s own words: “In isolation my imagination has run wild and this album is the result. I’ve told these stories to the best of my ability with all the love, wonder, and whimsy they deserve.” Check out the video for the song "exile".
Our second feature is from Lori McKenna, who let’s be honest, is a huge reason there is Taylor Swift. “The Balladeer” is another classic from McKenna (a follow up to the stunning “The Tree”) produced once again by Dave Cobb. It’s McKenna’s songwriting that is the feature attraction once again. For someone who has written hit songs for other artists (Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush”, Tim McGraw’s “Humble and Kind”) it’s a real treat that we get to hear McKenna sing her own words and at age 51, truly hit her stride as a solo artist. Here's the title track "The Balladeer".
