It's New Music Friday and there's some excellent new music heating up mid-July, so let's get to it!
Check out new music from:
The Aces - an American alternative pop band from Provo, Utah;
Alice Ivy - an Australian electronic musician and producer whose sound has been likened to The Avalanches, Gramatik and Marvin Gaye;
The Pretenders - Chrissie Hynde and the band are back with their 11th studio album;
Ellie Goulding - an English singer and songwriter whose influences include Joni Mitchell and Bjork;
Lianne La Havas - British singer and songwriter who was a former back-up singer for Paloma Faith;
Jhene Aiko - a three-time Grammy nominee American singer and songwriter;
S.G. Goodman - an American singer and songwriter whose debut was produced by My Morning Jacket's Jim James;
Blu & Exile - an American hip hop duo formed in 2007;
David Ramirez - an Americana musician from Austin, Texas.
Today's featured release is "Gaslighter" by The Chicks. It's been 14 years since "Taking the Long Way" and it's a joy to have new music from this amazing band. The album was originally planned to be something simple, like an album of covers, to fulfill their contract with Sony. However, after lead singer Natalie Maines divorce, she was inspired to write new material. This ranks up there with some of the best divorce albums (Blood on the Tracks, Shoot Out the Lights).
The Chicks could have gone in a very different direction after a long layoff and taken the lead from mega-producer Jack Antonoff (Taylor Swift, Lorde), but instead played to their strengths, strong harmonic vocals, killer songwriting and polished instrumental performances.
We are lucky to have new music from The Chicks.
