New Music Friday - 5/28/21

It’s been a while – but I’m back baby! After a brief hiatus, New Music Friday is back and lots of cool music for you to take in this long weekend. So let’s get to it and check out what I’m digging this week:

- Bachelor – The super duo of Jay Som and Palehound’s Ellen Kempner created a “best of both worlds” from their music talents combining power-pop and dreamy bedroom-pop perfectly. Check out the track “Anything at All”

- DMX – Posthumous releases are usually thrown away material that estates and record companies cash in on from the recently departed. This is not one of them. The collection of songs harkens back to his earlier, raw work with some special guests. Check out the track “Hold Me Down”

- Mustafa – On his debut full-length release, the artist formerly known as Mustafa the Profit delivers poetic lyrics over delicate folky music with just a hint of beats backing it. Check out the track “Ali”

- Mereba - The Atlanta-born, LA-based melodist has come through to deliver her brand new EP with an effortless approach to flow and lyricism over a lush array of production. Check out the track “News Come”

- Black Midi – Combine Fishbone, The Hold Steady and Gil-Scott Heron and you’ve got Black Midi. The energy will penetrate your soul and grab a hold of you. Check out the track “Chondromalacia Patella”

- Dispatch – The eighth album from the celebrated roots rockers is fresh and catchy with layered harmonies over tight backing music – further showing how comfortable they’ve become with each other. Check out the track “Break Our Fall”

Today’s featured artist: Natalia Lafourcade

The Mexican superstar has released a gorgeous album that melts me – Her voice is soothing and sends shivers up and down my spine. The follow up to the Latin Grammy winning, fundraising album called "Un Canto Por Mexico Vol. 1.” (where all proceeds benefit the reconstruction of Centro de Documentación del Son Jarocho in Veracruz. She continues to put a fresh spin on traditional music. This will be on repeat in my house all weekend, all month and all year long.
