March is coming in like a lion with the new releases that are out this first weekend of the third month. I’m so excited about the amount of new artists I’ve discovered already in 2021 – this week is no exception. So here we go - Here’s what I’m digging this week.
Check out new releases from the following artists:
- Denzel Curry & Kenny Beats – Technically a remix of their great 2020 release UNLOCKED. The combination of the great Florida rapper Curry and the punk-inspired rap producer Beats is a great marriage. The rapping is clean, strong and direct. It’s a fantastic companion to the 2020 release and worth a long listen. Check out the track “Cosmic”
- Adult Mom – The term “bedroom-recording” has been throw around a lot lately – the idea of a solo artist creating music in your bedroom for larger consumption. Previous releases by Adult Mom pretty much followed that sound. Her latest is more of a band album and is a great indie-rock/pop recording of honest, personal pop songs. Check out the track “Berlin”
- Jane Weaver – After eleven albums of music that could best be described as psychedelia-electronica, the British singer decided to go with a more pop route and delivers a delicious blend of synth pop with hints of her previous music. Check out the track “Pyramid Schemes”
- Elizabeth and the Catapult – A favorite of mine from years go (their song “Taller Children” is fantastic), the Brooklyn-based band returns with a group of piano-pop based songs that find inspiration from all over including Leonard Cohen, Regina Spektor and Joni Mitchell – all with a hint of pop music. It’s a soundtrack waiting for the right movie. Check out the track “Pop the Placebo”
- Fruit Bats – 20 years of writing songs that leader Eric D. Johnson says are all connected, we’re lucky to get more songs from him and the band. Themes of aging, nostalgia and fate run throughout the 11 tracks. Check out the track “Discovering”
- Kings of Leon – The band sounds so comfortable with each other and the new songs. The sounds are familiar to fans and easy to digest. It’s dreamy rock with enough punch to wet the whistle of AOR-music fans. Check out the track “The Bandit”
- Tigers Jaw – Combing the best of pop-punk and power pop genres, Tigers Jaw delivers songs that are pleasing to the ears. Sure to be cranked up at Dunder Mifflin, the Scranton-based band serve up punchy and catchy as hell tracks. Check out the track “Can’t Wait Forever”
Today’s featured artist: Genesis Owusu
I can’t figure out this debut from the Ghana born, Australian based artist who proclaimed “I'm Prince, if he were a rapper in 2020s Australia” and I’m really excited to dive into this mix of crazy. Inspired by the Purple One and others including Kendrick Lamar, Owusu blends funk, crooning, rap and so much more. This may be “just” a debut, but the themes and boundaries he pushes are that of a seasoned veteran of the industry. It’s an art masterpiece with surprises around every corner.
