Maybe as the weather starts to warm up, so does the new music. Because this week, I’ve got a ton of great new ear candy to tempt you. Let’s get to it…
Singles of the Week:
“Another Celebration at the End of the World” by Mammoth WVH
Single of the week - Hands down! Wolfie (the son of Eddie Van Halen) has begun carving his own legacy in the music industry. Not simply riding the coattails of his father. The new track is a banger with hot licks and power-pop tendencies that will surely get you bopping your head. His vocals have improved and let’s tip our hats to the fact that he tracked all the instruments himself.
“Days Move Slow” by Bully
Written after the passing of her dog, Alicia Bognanno (the artist known as Bully), the new song has a poppier kind of crunchy guitar rather than previous songs from Bully that were more aggressive. The album comes out in June and if this song is any indication, it shows the maturity in writing and production and I’m excited for more from Bully.
“We Used to Live Here” by Fruit Bats
A melancholy song about life moments - bittersweet and deeply sad too - all weaved into a gorgeous track from the fantastic Fruit Bats. The twangy voice over beautiful acoustics plays so well. It’s the latest single off their upcoming album.
“She’s Gone Cold” by BC Camplight
The lo-fi, indie singer/songwriter from New Jersey has composed a perfect break-up song, all while weaving in the Liverpool Philharmonic creating a cinematic experience that helps convey the death of a relationship. Camplight even used actual quotes from the break-up to create the song.
“That Feeling” by Durand Jones
I’ve been a fan of Jones’ previous work - and I’m thrilled for new music from him. This time he’s gone solo and written a cajun-ballad break-up song (do we have a theme this week?). The song captures a soul going through all the emotions - sadness, nostalgia and many more. The song takes a turn towards classic R&B and gives me all the feels of 1960s soul.
“To Be Yours” by Odesza (feat. Claud)
The electronic duo, coming off of their Grammy nomination, enlisted the dreamy vocals of Chicago’s buzzy bedroom popstar Claud for their latest track. The upbeat song trends more towards indie pop rather than their previous electronic-specific music. It’s an easy add.
“Memory Lane” by Taking Meds
Who needs a new punk-pop song? I do! The band (that’s been around for a decade) combines the best of 90s rock with pop-punk and some catchy melodies. Reminds me a bit of Lemonheads with their melodic hooks.
Albums of the Week:
Since I Have a Lover by 6LACK
It’s been five years since the Atlanta rapper and singer dropped a full-length project, but his latest is smooth and tightly produced with easy going beats and flowing guitars. After dealing with a bout of depression and uncertainty, he’s showing great maturity with his lyrics on songs like “Spirited Away” and “Preach”.
Memento Mori by Depeche Mode
What do you do when you’re four decades in and you’re down to a duo - some might say a shell of what your band used to be. What do you do? You put out a fresh sounding album with tones and hints from your past. There’s fantastic doom and gloom from the boys which after a pandemic and losing member Andy Fletcher, could be seen as the exact direction you’d go. Listen to “People Are Good” and “Before We Drown” get that classic (yet fresh) DM song.
Celebrants by Nickel Creek
After nine long years and many side and solo projects, one of my faves, Nickel Creek is back with an album full of rich harmonies, impeccable musicianship and frankly, just some great songs. The band has always weaved together a fantastic sound and now they bring together all they’ve learned and done throughout the years and put it into one fantastic release. They’re a band that can change tempo and direction within a song easily and you don’t blink an eye. Starting off with the line, “My god, it’s good to see you…” is something we should be saying to them.
Wish You Were Here by Demo Division
Let’s take a trip back to the 2010s and the heart of the emo movement. That’s just what you’ll get with the new EP from Demo Division. The songs are raw and emotional with enough grit to still feel indie. Check them out.
Grapefruit by Country Westerns
The new 4-song EP from the Nashville band is just a preview of what’s to come from the band. Their full-length is out next month. The band blends country and rockabilly with enough rock to have you tapping your toes while downing a beer in a musty bar. The title track blisters from the start and kicks down the saloon doors.
