Welcome to Global Release Day, aka, New Music Friday. Did you know that Friday is the international day for releasing music singles and albums. The new global release day went into effect on July 10, 2015 in more than 45 major recorded music markets worldwide with new music being released on a Friday as part of 'New Music Fridays'.
So now that you know, let’s get to the music. Here’s what I’m digging this week:
Singles of the Week:
“For My Friends” by King Princess
Gearing up for their sophomore release, King Princess returns with an emotional alt-pop song. It’s a love song directed to and about her life-long friends. The shimmering keyboards lead to their beautiful voice about a friendship that so many of us want. “Loving me takes patience,” the singer admits, but she takes comfort in knowing her bonds are unbreakable. I loved their debut Cheap Queen, so I’m excited for more great music from King Princess. Stay tuned!
Album of the Week:
Sore Thumb by Oso Oso
Surprise! The new album from the cool band from Long Beach, New York is out today and I’m stoked! Jade Lilitri recorded Sore Thumb over the course of one month with his late cousin Tavish Maloney in Queens, New York. Maloney died less than a month after the recording, and Lilitri chose to keep the songs mostly intact, other than getting the album mixed.
“The making of this record is now a memory of a time that I hold closer to my heart than anything,” Lilitri said in a press release. “Regardless of how I feel about these songs in the years to come, I am so happy this exists. Thanks for listening. Be decent.”
There’s a great mix of a slacker-folky sound with a power punk edge from the former emo band. The record is the product of two guys taking acid, getting into Nerf fights, and letting the influence of late ’90s Gap soundtracks take proper hold.
I loved their previous album, Basking in the Glow, and look forward to diving deeper into the new one this weekend.
Check out my favorite track, “Fly on the Wall”
