New Music Friday 2/4/2022

It’s a strange week for New Music Friday. Usually I’ll pick a single or two and one featured full-length release. After browsing for a couple hours, no full length release catches my ear this week.

But there are some great new songs out today, so let’s focus on the good stuff - Here’s what I’m digging this week - Hope you find something you like! Here are today’s picks.

Singles of the Week:

“Bore U” by Twen

The catchy hook grabs you right from the start on the new single from the Nashville-by-way-of-Boston band. A classic kiss-off theme runs throughout with lyrics like, “When you tell a lie/You taste it/It seeps down deep inside/You can’t shake it/And life won’t be enough,” being coyly sung by lead vocalist Jane Fitzsimmons. The sound is more polished than their previous D.I.Y. sound and while there’s no official full-length release, at least we’ve got this catchy number to hold us over until there is.

“The Way It Shatters” by Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

I loved this Australian bands 2020 album Sideways to New Italy and their new single shows great growth from that album. The guitar-rock sound that was on the 2020 release is still there, but the addition of a shimmering synth sound kicking off the song adds depth and layers. The song focuses on the contemplation of the human race—how, especially when in crisis, we’re all just people doing the best we can with lyrics like, “When it all comes apart/One true heart”.

“Softly” by Arlo Parks

She topped my favorites from 2021 and now she’s back with a lovely new single. Smooth melodies mix with her poetic lyrics, the song is tender despite the fact that the lyrics will break your heart. It’s a song about yearning, about how fragile you feel in the dying days of a relationship when you’re still desperately in love. If you’re in the DC area and you want to catch her on tour, she’s open for Clairo (another great artist) at The Fillmore Silver Spring on February 19 and 20.
