It’s a pretty epic New Music Friday as one of the greatest artists in music has released his first original song in 17 years! What else is good this week? Let’s dive in and see what you might like:
Billy Joel - “Turn the Lights Back On”
A deeply emotional love ballad that feels like classic Joel. The majority of the song is simply Joel’s vocals and his piano. The song builds to some orchestral moments and is truly moving. Is the song also written to his fans about the lengthy absence of new music? Maybe he did in fact wait too long to turn the lights back on. But I’m sure glad he found the switch.
Camera Obscura - “Big Love”
I forgot how much I love this Scottish band - I mean, it’s been ten years since we’ve had new music from them. The chamber pop sound that they perfected is still around and lead singer Tracyanne Campbell sounds so great on this country-tinged track. A new album and world tour is happening in 2024 so tee this one up in anticipation.
J Mascis - What Do We Do Now
The leader of Dinosaur Jr. is back with another solid solo album. While younger me loved the grungy Dinosaur Jr., the aging me loves the more melodic, textured and acoustic songs on his latest. There’s still the sprawling guitar solos that remind me of my college days. Highlights include “Can’t Believe We’re Here”, “I Can’t Find You” and “Hangin On”.
The Last Dinner Party - Prelude to Ecstasy
The excitement has been building and the wait is finally over. After teasing their new album for months with some fantastic singles, the British group have delivered an amazing debut album that sets them apart from so many others. You’ll hear fresh takes on rock music with clear nods to Kate Bush and Florence + The Machine with yearning lyrics and vocals and soaring music. I feel like if you took a modern band, threw them into the movie Amadeus, you’d have The Last Dinner Party. Highlights include “My Lady of Mercy”, “Nothing Matters” and “Burn Alive”.
Liquid Mike - Paul Bunyan’s Slingshot
There’s a great feel of pop-punk and mid-90s The Posies when I listen to the latest from Liquid Mike. You’ll hear tight, loud hook-filled songs that never make it to the three minute mark. Is it simply slacker-rock without the lo-fi? I don’t know, but it’s hard not to get up and pogo a bit. Highlights include “Town Ease”, “Pacer” and “Drug Dealer”.
Britti - Hello, I’m Britti
You must get to know Britti - the debut album from the New Orleans native-turned-Nashville resident highlights an elegant blend of country and R&B, held together by her ethereal vocals. Produced by the amazing Dan Auerbach, there’s heartbreak and a life-long journey in these songs. It’s an album I won’t soon forget. Highlights include “Nothing Compares To You”, “Keep Running” and “Reach Out”.
