It’s been a long week but Friday always brings a sense of accomplishment along with the hope for new music that will grab my attention. Music heals and makes us feel every emotion and that’s a really great thing. So happy Friday everyone - Let’s get to the music!
Single of the Week:
“Trouble” by Troye Sivan & Jay Som
This beautiful, catchy song from two very talented singers is from the soundtrack to the upcoming film Three Months (which Sivan stars in). The emotions in the song mimic the emotions of his character in the film - confused, young love and where our place is in the world. The unexpected connection of a pop music artist and a DIY bedroom-pop star works so well in combining their talents. It’s an anthem for those in need of one - the coming-of-age teenager who isn’t sure what’s next.
Album of the Week:
Life on Earth by Hurray for the Riff Raff
2017’s The Navigator was a favorite of mine from Hurray for the Riff Raff - there was a harder edged sound from their normal alt-country.
The latest find leader Alynda Segarra stretching the boundaries once again, incorporating more keyboards and a pop sense, while still never leaving where she came from. Her songwriting is maturing as well with the lyrics looking forward instead of revisiting the past as in previous songs. Segarra cites British big-tent punk revolutionaries the Clash, Canadian new age icon Beverly Glenn-Copeland, and the bellowing, genre-flouting Puerto Rican pop superstar Bad Bunny as influences this time around.
Segarra calls the new music “nature punk” — music about surviving and thriving within a worldwide meltdown, constructed by melting down sounds from around the world.
Tracks like “Precious Cargo” and the grand finale “Saga” touch on hot political topics and make you want to listen carefully to the lyrics over and over again. Segarra isn’t being preachy in an in your face way, she’s simply opening up, like any great songwriter who has something important to get off their chest. I’ll be listening to this one all year long and beyond.
Check out my favorite track, “Pierced Arrows”
