New Music Friday - 2/10/2023

It's Friday - so let's listen to some new music.

Single of the Week:

“Ghosts Again” by Depeche Mode

Almost a year after the unexpected death of the founding Depeche Mode keyboardist, Andy Fletcher, fellow members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore have released their first single as a duo. It’s a throwback of a bit with their sound, not as big as has been their way more recently. The song finds the band contemplating faith but knowing we’ll be together in the end.

Albums of the Week:

This Is Why by Paramore

I love Paramore - I think they’re one of the best bands out there. Their sound continues to evolve, and on their first album in six years the band seems to have put the best of all they’ve done into one place. They’ve got dance-punk-pop songs along with atmospheric ballads. Along with the previously released songs you’ve probably heard already, check out “You First” an uptempo jam and the gorgeous “Liar”. They’re hitting the road sometime in May, so be sure to grab your tickets now - they’re sure to go fast to see this fantastic band.

Raven by Kelela

Like Paramore, Kelela’s latest is her first in six years. And it’s totally worth it! It’s modern R&B at its finest. Her voice is striking against the mostly stark music. She reminds me of Janelle Monae so much. The futuristic sound Kelela puts out is vulnerable and deeply in touch with her sense of self. Be sure to check out the outstanding tracks like “On The Run” and “Contact”.

Taken By Force by CIVIC

Aussie garage punk band CIVIC deliver surfy, garage punk songs that are accessible. Big riffs, sloppy solos, sneering vocals. It’s all there. While the band didn’t set out to break down any political walls or barriers, the songs are filled with the right amount of angst and vulnerability. The songs recall another great punk band from Australia - The Saints. Check out the catchy “Born In The Heat”, “Time Girl” and “End of the Line”.
