New Music Friday (11/6/2020)

Everyone take a deep breath – good? Now let’s listen to some new music, okay?

Check out new tunes from the following artists:

- Kylie Minogue – Need to move your body? Kylie’s back with an album full of movin’ and groovin’ tunes to get your ass moving. Check out the track “Monday Blues”

- Bree Runway – The UK rapper’s debut is fresh and dips into various genres all backing strong, powerful lyrics. Check out the track “Rolls Royce”

- Fred Hersch – The jazz pianist’s latest is a stunningly beautiful solo release of soothing covers that are perfect for a Sunday morning cup of coffee. Check out the track “Get Out of Town”

- Dino Saluzzi – The wonderful 85-year old Argentinian bandoneón player and composer’s latest is a wonderful, intimate recording of this master at work. Check out the track “Ausencias”

- Birdy – One of my daughter’s favorites, Birdy’s new music was written and produced independently during her time away from the spotlight. The EP features four beautifully crafted songs from the 24-year old. Check out the track “Island Lights”

- Madison Cunningham – The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter releases a 4-song EP of covers that are transformed from their original. Check out her take on John Mayer’s “The Age of Worry”

- Christo Graham – The throwback sound of Graham reminds me of a mix of Laurel Canyon and Townes Van Zant. There’s a sense of messiness but with each deeper listen you get the hooks and licks that flash a bit more. Check out the track “Back on Track” (and tell me if you think you hear The Beatles)

Today’s featured artist is the wonderful singer-songwriter Donovan Woods. Writing from a solo perspective (not just music), Woods’ latest album Without People touches on what life and love are like the next time down the road. It’s a beautiful record that allows the listener to hear Woods’ emotions pouring out. His whispery sweet vocals remind me of Simon & Garfunkel.

Without People should be placed near the front of the Canadian music class along with artists like Blue Rodeo, The Tragically Hip and Neil Young. It’s time for more of America to discover the greatness of Donovan Woods.
