New Music Friday (11/20/2020)

We’re less than a week until Thanksgiving which will look very different for so many of us. Along with family and friends, I’m thankful for music. It always has helped me through tough times. Let’s jump in and find something good. Check out new releases from the following artists:

- Megan Thee Stallion – After taking the music world by storm, it’s hard to believe that this is Megan’s debut album. It’s a sexy tour de force of hot collabs that shine the spotlight on Megan’s voice and rapping abilities. Check out the track “Circles”

- Mamalarky – In their bio, the Atlanta-based band describe themselves as “the cure for depression or the cause of all universal sadness.” There’s beautiful vocals thrown over some trippy, quirky alternative music. Check out the track “Almighty Heat”

- Kali Uchis – I love Kali’s voice on her first Spanish-language only album. The Columbian-American star hails from just across the river (Alexandria, VA) and combines James Bond-style tracks with slow jams. Check out the track “Telepatía”

- Partner – Clever lyrics with heavy crunching catchy hooks are featured on the latest from Partner who describe the release as “Canadian Queer Post Classic Rock”, it fits next to Diet Cig, Best Coast and other strong female-led rock bands. Check out the track “Rock Is My Rock”

- 5 Billion in Diamonds – The new album from Butch Vig’s latest band flip flops between 80s synth and 90s rock with a satisfying finish. Check out the title track “Divine Accidents”

- Ida Mae – The Americana duo (from London) craft five great country-blues type numbers on their EP. The songs paint a road trip around America and we’re lucky to be riding shotgun. Check out the track “Deep River”

- Tayla Parx – The follow-up to her acclaimed debut, the Dallas-based singer combines R&B, rap and some synth pop for a satisfying release of emotional baggage themed songs. Check out the track “Fixerupper”

- Tank and the Bangas – The 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Concert winners are back with a cool EP of songs they made with friends. The joy in doing so shines through with catchy tunes that continue their music journey. Check out the track “TSA”

- Joseph The Spouse – “This Is Us” actor Chris Sullivan branches out on his new release co-written and produced by Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes, Mandy Moore’s husband). It’s a pleasant, mellow country song with touches of Laurel Canyon. Check out the track “They Claim to Have the Answers”

- The Dirty Knobs - Fronted by founding Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell, this debut album clearly touches on Campbell’s previous band along with The Byrds and some southern boogie sounds. Check out the track “Sugar”

- Garth Brooks – Surprise! Garth released a new album full of exactly what you would expect from Brooks. Solid, classic country songs with an updated sound. Check out the track “All Day Long”

Today’s featured artist is Babeheaven. The UK duo’s debut album brims with the bedroom indie sound that they crafted so well on their earlier EP and mixtape. The dreamy, synth tracks support the beautifully, understated voice of lead singer Nancy Andersen. It’s calm, warm with a hint of trip-hop behind it.

There’s some feels of Cocteau Twins as I listen more with Portishead not far behind. It’s a great group of songs to warm you as the temps start to drop.
