New Music Friday (10/16/2020)

Let’s jump right into it – New Music Friday is here and there’s some great music for your ears to take in today. Check out new music from the following:

- Black Thought – The lead MC of The Roots is out with a new album of mindful tracks and while so many find his role as part of Jimmy Fallon’s house band fun, this album sheds that with fierce and powerful lyrics behind some sick beats. Check out the track “Good Morning”

- Beabadoobee – The Filipino-born British singer-songwriter is out with her first studio album after a number of extended play releases. She calls it an album “for girls to cry to and dance to and get angry to.” Check out the track “Care”

- Matt Berninger – The lead singer of The National has always written beautiful prose as songs and that continues on his solo release. His Nick Cave/Leonard Cohen vocals shine over minimal instrumentals. Check out the track “Take Me Out of Town”

- Mipso – The North Carolina Americana band delivers a solid album of pure harmonies over acoustic guitar driven songs. Check out the track “Hourglass”

- Deep Sea Diver – Guitarist Jessica Dobson has played guitar for Beck and The Shins just to name a few. She’s out on her own (with a few cool guests) for her latest release. With shimmering guitars and keyboard, it’s also got some of her strongest vocals. Check out the track “Impossible Weight”

- Sturgill Simpson – Surprise! Simpson released a bluegrass album today with 20 new versions of songs cherry-picked from the country-leaning side of his career. Check out the track “The Storm”

- Cordovas – The embrace of The Band and the Grateful Dead is strong with these guys. Grab this one 8-track or vinyl and curl up with it. Check out the track “High Feeling”

- Gulfer – An emo band out of Canada whose sound is becoming more polished in their production and lyrics as they veer towards adulthood. Check out the track “Nature Kids”

- Resistance Revival Chorus – A collective of 70-plus women and nonbinary singers that was founded in 2017 following the Women’s March and that works to elevate female voices, especially women of color, have released their debut album and it’s beautiful. Check out the track “Dawn”

- Sam Roberts Band – The Montreal-based band wrote most of these tracks pre-Covid, thus offering a more upbeat, hopeful message in their solid, rock songs. Check out the track “Ascension”

I’m very excited about this one as I became a fan a couple years ago with their release Dirty Pictures (Part 2). At the time, their bar band sound was dirty and catchy. This time around the band continues to evolve channeling the classic rock sound (guitars and piano driven). While nobody should do it anymore, it’s a double album. But dig deep and you’ll find an album chock full of perfectly crafted songs from the Philly band. Band leader Adam Weiner wrote and produced everything on the new release that is full of soul and emotion. When you’re flipping through your vinyl, it’ll fit nicely in between Born to Run and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
