Welcome to the first New Music Friday of 2022. It’s a light load this week as many artists are gearing up for releases later this year. Scanning the calendar, I think we’ve got a lot of great music to look forward to. Here are today’s picks of the week. Enjoy!
Singles of the Week:
“Circles Around This Town” by Maren Morris
A reflective song about when Morris first moved to Nashville from Texas, the song harkens back to her earlier music, as it even references some of her earlier songs in the lyrics. “Couple hundred songs, and the ones that finally worked / Was the one about a car and the one about a church,” she sings, referencing her 2016 debut single “My Church” and follow-up “80s Mercedes.” It’s an easy flowing song that excites me for her upcoming album.
“Dream On” by Ben Rector
Rector, a favorite of our household, is back with three new tracks off his upcoming album, The Joy of Music. The first single is a beautiful ballad written as a father to his kids and maybe to his former self. About not giving up and how maybe dreams can come true.
Album of the Week:
Dawn FM by The Weeknd
I’ve never been disappointed by The Weeknd and that trend continues with his new album. It’s a concept album - the idea of purgatory and being stuck in gridlock in a tunnel, a light beckoning at the end to signal the transition to the other side. You still with me? The beauty of why I love The Weeknd’s music is that he doesn’t stay in one place musically. Here, he’s taking us to a Euro discotheque. The songs would fit right alongside tracks by Depeche Mode, Dead or Alive and others you might have heard on the dance floor back in the mid-80s. You’ll also hear some familiar voices as his guests include Tyler, The Creator, Quincy Jones and Jim Carrey (yes…him).
Check out my favorite track “Sacrifice”
