New Music Friday - 1/6/2023

It’s the first New Music Friday of 2023 and we’ve got new stuff from three very influential artists - The Godfather of Punk, The Queen of Country Pop and one of the pioneers of prog rock.

Singles of the Week:

“Giddy Up!” by Shania Twain

Time to put your boots on and hit the dance floor! Shania is back and poised to take over the country airwaves - and maybe the pop ones as well. This danceable track’s title is inspired by a phrase she said in the studio - similar to her “Let’s Go Girls” from her iconic hit “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”

“Panopticom” by Peter Gabriel

It’s been seven years since we’ve had new music from Gabriel. Was the wait worth it? So far, I’d say yes. The first single from his upcoming release picks up where he’s left off in the past. Working with Brian Eno and his usual suspects (Tony Levin, Manu Katche, David Rhodes), Gabriel's voice sounds sharp and the backing band is of course, excellent as they have created a mature pop track that envisions, as Gabriel puts it, an idea to initiate the creation of an infinitely expandable accessible data globe.

Album of the Week:

Every Loser by Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop sounds angry and reflective on his 19th album. He’s both witty and gritty and kicks off his latest with the fiery track, “Frenzy”, which may be his most ferocious song in years. Even though he’s backed by an all-star line-up (Chad Smith, Duff McKagan, Stone Gossard and Taylor Hawkins just to name a few), Pop is clearly in control and in the spotlight with his deep, rough voice. The track “Strung Out Johnny” essays addiction and who better to opine about it. Pop has seen it all and done it all. His candor on Every Loser is refreshing. He could have easily put together a string of songs that mean nothing, he combined the fierceness of his early work with The Stooges and his later solo work. It helps that producer Andrew Watt has worked with a wide range of talent from Ozzy to Miley. Another favorite on first listen is “Morning Show”, an emotional song that addresses age and vulnerability (“I’ll fix my face and go, go and do the morning show.”). At 76 years old, Iggy Pop has found a sweet spot with his latest and we’re all better for it.
