New Music Friday - 1/5/2024

It’s the first New Music Friday of 2024 and we’ve got some bangers out today. New this year to New Music Fridays, I've created a Spotify playlist of new music. I'll keep it updated every week. Enjoy the 2024 New Music Friday playlist! Let’s dive in and see what you might like to listen to this weekend.

Alice Merton - “run away girl”

Remember that catchy song “No Roots” from singer-songwriter Alice Merton? She’s back with new music - the first single off her upcoming album. “run away girl” is an introspective look at oneself, feeling lost not only in the outside world, but also on the inside. Where do we all fit in? The track takes inspiration from 80s pop music combined with Merton’s darker pop sound.

Frank Turner - “No Thank You For The Music”

Boom goes the dynamite! Frank Turner is back with an energetic, angry and defiant song. It’s about defiance, rejection of mainstream culture and staying angry as you get older. But it’s not just angry for angry sake. It’s anger that liberates, encouraging one to take a stand. Turner’s delivery is a throwback to his earlier work with blistering lyrics and driving drums and fierce guitars. Turn this one up.

Jasmine Jethwa - “Pylons”

New (to me) artist alert! Jethwa’s warm, gorgeous vocals are the focus here. With just enough acoustic guitars in the background, Jethwa’s storytelling style is perfect while sipping coffee on a cold winter morning. You hear her early influences: Dido, David Grey, Tracy Chapman in the track. Jasmine makes swaying, folk-tinged acoustic pop songs with a full voice that teems with rich emotions.

Liam Gallagher & John Squire - “Just Another Rainbow”

The duo we all secretly could have hoped for is here. Gallagher, the lead singer from Oasis and Squire, the lead guitarist from The Stone Roses have teamed up for one hell of a throwback track. Taking the best of both bands, blending it together and throwing it out there for all of us to enjoy. Gallagher’s voice is strong and Squire’s guitar playing is spot on. It’s a retro-jam that I am totally digging.

Myles Smith - “Behind”

Growing up in Luton, UK, the singer-songwriter blends the best of folk, Americana and pop music into his latest song. With enough inspiration/hat tip to Mumford & Sons, Smith’s deep, rich voice sweeps over the crescendoing backing music. The message is simple(ish), leave all your troubles and issues behind - We don’t have to hurt anymore.

Richard Fairlie - “History In Our Hearts”

Another new (to me) artist - Fairlie creates smooth R&B tinged pop music with the right amount of acoustic backing. The Caribbean/British artist UK singer has gained quite the following through YouTube and TikTok and is poised at taking the next step. His voice is sweet and drips with honey. A cool groove of a song to throw on for some late night driving.

The Lemon Twigs - “My Golden Years”

One album I (maybe mistakenly) left off of my top of 2023 was the one from The Lemon Twigs. Combining power-pop with old-time groovy 60s pop, the duo are back with a fantastic Byrds/Beatles sounding track. Under the radar and underrated for years, The Lemon Twigs should be high on your list of bands to check out in 2024.

Gabby Barrett - “You’re My Texas”

Barrett, a former American Idol contestant has a sweet, perfect country voice and her latest single flows gorgeously, like watching the sunset over the cornfields. It’s a love song, about always being able to come back home, not just to where you live, but to who you’re coming home to. In a time when there’s too much bro-country out there, Barrett is a breath of fresh air in the country music genre.

Erick the Architect - “Ezekiel’s Wheel”

Working with funk master George Clinton, the founding member of New York City’s Flatbush Zombies has created a smooth, funky groove of a track. The rapping sways and is easy to take in with a nod to Erick’s time growing up attending church with his family in Brookly, which partly led him to becoming a musician. A fantastic preview of what’s to come from one of the best rappers out there.
