We’re almost through January – how is that even possible? Things are heating up with new music, so let’s check out the latest releases on New Music Friday. Check out new releases from the following artists:
- Madlib – The latest hot collab from the DJ, producer and rapper is with the English electronic artist Four Tet. It’s a cool combination of R&B, jazz, beats and reggae as it weaves a look back and look ahead at the sounds and music that has helped shape his career. Check out the track “The New Normal”
- Yasmin Williams – The 24-year old solo guitarist (who was drawn to the instrument after mastering Guitar Hero 2) is like a painter swirling her guitar like brush strokes creating music that pulls you in and allows you the space to explore it deeply. Check out the track “Swift Breeze”
- Arlo Parks - The debut album from 20-year-old British poet/singer-songwriter is one of the best in this new year. Parks voice is crisp and gorgeous. The music dips back and forth between vintage soul and modern R&B. Dubbed in her native country as the “Voice of a Generation” might be a lot to live up to, but Parks seems up to the challenge with these near perfect songs. Check out the track “Hope”
- Ani Difranco – The acclaimed singer-songwriter explores healing and social justice on her latest. It’s classic Difranco with socially conscience lyrics layered over an acoustic groove. Check out the track “Do or Die”
- Selwyn Birchwood – There is no way this is a 36-year old singing these very cool, blues/soul songs. Shifting between swamp boogie blues to classic R&B, you’ll want to grab someone and dance up a storm in your kitchen. Check out the track “You Can’t Steal My Shine”
Today’s featured artist: Celeste
I get goosebumps listening to Britain’s next soul hero (and hopefully America’s). Celeste learned to sing by following along to artists such as Aretha Franklin and you hear the classics coming through in her voice. You may have heard her on the “Soul” soundtrack, but things are about to blow up for her. From smokey ballads to up-tempo jams, if the future of soul and R&B rests on the shoulders of Celeste, then we’re in good shape.
