New Music Friday - 1/28/2022

It’s the last New Music Friday of January - where has the month gone? Let’s check out some new tunes to get you going into your weekend on a good note. Here are today’s picks.

Single of the Week:

“Anyone For You” by George Ezra

The first single off his upcoming third album, has the British singer bringing a sunny, soulful sound. His first new music since 2018, the song is a patchwork of lyric ideas found in old notebooks and chance moments shared between musicians in the studio. It’s a joyous and infectious song featuring the booming, deep vocals we’ve come to know from Ezra.

Album of the Week:

Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) Soundtrack

The official soundtrack to Questlove's documentary, Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) is finally out! While the film came out last June, the music is only now available and it's incredible, with historic performances by The 5th Dimension, B.B. King, Nina Simone and more. Listening to this is listening to a celebration of R&B music in the late 1960s. The eventual funk movement of the 1970s is heard throughout many songs and the impact of the Civil Rights movement lives in tracks from Simone and The Staples Singers. And let’s not forget the unpredictable yet brilliant Sly and the Family Stone. Hearing the energy pour from the speakers, feeling the connection these artists made during the Harlem Culture Festival.

Check out my favorite track “Are You Ready” by Nina Simone
