It’s New Music Friday (on Saturday) so let’s get to today’s featured artist. It’s the New Orleans funk band Galactic with some help from the immortal Irma Thomas on their new single “Lady Liberty”.

When two great artists team up, you always hope for more than just a song. Well, thankfully Galactic decided recording a whole album with Irma Thomas was a good idea! Coming out in April, Audience with the Queen will have eight new songs specifically written for Thomas (along with one cover). The first single is a poignant and powerful song that explores racially fueled violence and social justice.
Thomas said “It’s about what’s happening now…it’s just that what’s happening around us needs to be sung about and heard.” She’s right. The funky song is crazy relevant right now and hearing someone who has lived through so much singing such a song in this day and age is inspiring and gives you goosebumps.
