It’s New Music Friday and there’s some tasty tunes out there this week. But today’s featured artist is 100-year old Marshall Allen and his new single “New Dawn”.
Marshall Allen - “New Dawn”
Let me tell you a little about Marshall Allen. He was born in 1924. He fought in World War II. And in 1958, he and his alto saxophone joined the ever cool, cosmic jazz ensemble Sun Ra Arkestra. In 1995, he took over as the band’s leader, following the death of Sun Ra in 1993. And at the ripe old age of 100, he’s releasing his first solo album in 2025. Differentiating from his work with the Arkestra, the first single, “New Dawn”, has an easygoing, classic smooth jazz sound with beautiful orchestration and perfect accompaniment from singer Neneh Cherry (daughter of jazz great Don Cherry).
