Happy New Music Friday y’all! Let’s get to it - Here are today’s picks of the week. Enjoy!
Singles of the Week:
“Liar” by Envy of None
From the ashes of Rush comes the new band from guitarist Alex Lifeson. Experimenting with a different sound (industrial, synth-heavy arrangements), Lifeson explores a darker sound and the vocals from Maiah Wayne are great - they fit perfectly with the music. The upcoming album is said to “ricochet between various shades of alternative, experimental and synth rock.
“Love Me More” by Mitski
Written before the pandemic, Mitski’s new single reads like something written during the pandemic! With an 80’s synth-pop sound, the lyrics talk about staying at home and while it had a different meaning before, some of the sentiments remain. Is the song about her fans loving her more or a partner loving her more? We’re not sure, but I am glad to have new music from her.
Album of the Week:
Storm Queen by Grace Cummings
That voice! The dynamic Australian singer doesn’t just sing - She wails and howls and makes you stop what you’re doing to listen. It’s husky yet tender and so emotional, laying on top of music that is best described as “intense folk”. You feel Cummings pouring her heart out to you, about her life, about the world.
Check out my favorite track “Raglan”
