It’s Throwback Thursday and we head back to 1966 – We request the honor of your presence at the wedding of George Harrison and Patti Boyd, married on this day 55 years ago.
So why not feature a song like “Something” or “For You Blue” – two of the songs that Harrison wrote for Boyd while in The Beatles? Because the story of George Harrison and Patti Boyd isn’t complete without Eric Clapton.
In the late 1960s, Clapton and Harrison became close friends and began writing and recording music together. This is when Clapton fell in love with Boyd. In an effort to satisfy his infatuation, Clapton briefly dated Boyd's sister Paula (ewww). Later, his album with Derek and the Dominos, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, was written to proclaim his love for Boyd. (Note: Clapton drew inspiration from The Story of Layla and Majnun by Persian writer Nizami. The tale concerns a man driven to madness by his unattainable love.)
Clapton, after hearing no from Boyd numerous times, became addicted to heroin and descended into a self-imposed exile for three years. Upon his return in 1974, Clapton continued his pursuit of Boyd, whose relationship with Harrison was deteriorating rapidly. In 1979, Clapton and Boyd were married (and Clapton remained friendly with Harrison, who even called Clapton his “husband-in-law”).
Phew...aaaaand...scene!
