Do you know the names John Davis, Brad Howell and Charles Shaw?
If I told you that on this day in 1990, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences stripped the 1989 Best New Artist Grammy from Milli Vanilli, would that help at all?
Despite the pressure and lies from Milli Vanilli (Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus) and their producer, Frank Farian (also the founder and voice behind the disco-pop group Boney M), it was revealed that in fact, Davis, Howell and Shaw were the real singers behind the songs from Milli Vanilli.
It was one of the biggest scandals in music history, though it wasn't an isolated incident. Around the same time, dance-pop groups Black Box and C+C Music Factory got caught doing almost exactly the same thing.
Shortly afterwards, Rob & Fab tried to make a comeback, singing on their own release Rob & Fab, but the album found very little audience in the states (selling only around 2,000 copies) with a second album released in 1998. Sadly, on the eve of the album's promotional tour, Rob Pilatus was found dead of a suspected alcohol and prescription drug overdose.
In 2018, Fab was quoted in an AP interview saying, "People might say, 'Well, you know, they didn't sing on the record. But look at the rest. We were the heart and soul of Milli Vanilli. We did those 107 cities (on tour)...in eight months. We worked hard. We worked our butts off. We entertained people."
C'mon, admit it, you were entertained...Girl, you know it's true.
