Today’s pick is soulful blast of sonic twelve-bar blues that’s a “classic Texas shuffle”. Released in 1983, “Pride and Joy” became an instant hit for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble.
Why is this my pick for today? 30 years ago today, Vaughan died in a helicopter crash in Wisconsin after a performance.
Vaughan’s career started in the bars of Austin, Texas where he formed his band and became a staple on the Austin music scene. After performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1982 where David Bowie saw him perform, Vaughan played on the Bowie album Let’s Dance including on the title track and “China Girl”.
He only released seven albums, including one with his older brother Jimmie, but his influence on others like John Mayer, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and so many others remains.
