Throwback Thursday (8/20/2020)

Today's tune is a song that beautifully weaves together the past, present and future. It ranks high on the emotional scale, touching on loss, memories, desires and yes, also hope.

Great lyrics are great poetry and prose. Gord Downie, lead singer and songwriter for the band The Tragically Hip, wrote great lyrics.

On this day in 2016, Canada's The Tragically Hip, performed their final concert in Kingston, Ontario at the end of an emotional fifteen date farewell tour. Lead singer Gord Downie revealed earlier in year that he was battling terminal brain cancer. He died in 2017.

Downie was beloved in his native Canada. He was comparable to the likes of Dylan or Springsteen here in the U.S. A singer-songwriter who cared about his home and the issues that affected it and those that lived in it.

Upon hearing of his death, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remembered Downie as, "Our buddy Gord, who loved this country with everything he had—and not just loved it in a nebulous, 'Oh, I love Canada' way. He loved every hidden corner, every story, every aspect of this country that he celebrated his whole life."

I loved the band and was lucky to have seen them at the 9:30 Club in 1995. It was a powerful show, full of spirit and passion.

Today's song is "Ahead By A Century"
