On this day, today's Throwback Thursday tune started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart in 1966...The Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City".
I’ve never tired of this song. It’s the perfect dichotomy of a summer day/night. Unbearable during the day but when the sun goes down, it’s a different world. Listen to the music crescendo as the line about “But at night it’s a different world” kicks in.
The song features a series of car horns during the instrumental bridge, starting with a Volkswagen Beetle horn, and ends up with a jackhammer sound, in order to give the impression of the sounds of the summer in the city.
Interesting fact about the traffic sound effects – The band didn’t like what they heard on regular sound effect records – They brought in a sound guy and spent hours listening to what he had recorded.
