Today's throwback tune is from Amy Winehouse. Winehouse died on this day in 2011.
Winehouse was known for her deep, expressive vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul, R&B and jazz. Inspired by her love of 1960s girl groups, Winehouse took the look and sound and made it her own. As Rolling Stone Magazine put it, "...she assembled sonic licks and stylistic fragments borrowed from Motown, Stax, punk and early hip-hop."
To me, what made Winehouse great was not only her amazing vocal talent and her style, but she made me think more about some of the classic music that I had forgotten. Sometimes new artists can help us rediscover music from our past. She was a bridge of an artist between yesterday's music and today's.
Sadly, when she died, she became part of the 27 Club joining others who died at the age of 27, including Kurt Cobain, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Chris Bell, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and many more.
