Throwback Thursday (7/16/2020)

Today's throwback tune is from William Bell, born on this day in 1939.

Initially signed to Stax Records as a songwriter, Bell eventually performed alongside label mates such Otis Redding and Booker T. & the MG's.

In 1969, he released the single, "Born Under a Bad Sign" that he and Booker T. had originally written for blues musician Albert King in 1967.

The song has been covered by numerous artists, most notably, Cream.

Fun fact: In 1986, Billy Idol covered Bell's song "I Forgot to Be Your Lover" renaming it, "To Be a Lover".

Here is William Bell performing "Born Under a Bad Sign" at the 2017 Grammy Awards (with special guest Gary Clark Jr.).
