On this day in 1966, The Supremes became the first all-female group to chart a number one album in the United States.
The album, their ninth, The Supremes A' Go-Go was produced at Hitsville U.S.A. in Detroit and contained such classics as "Baby I Need Your Loving" and "Get Ready".
No one knew The Supremes better than their writing/production team Holland-Dozier-Holland, so fittingly, the bulk of the album consists of songs penned by the trio.
Many of the songs were done previously by other Motown artists but The Supremes made the songs their own. With a danceable R&B sound throughout the album, it's the vocals of Ross, Wilson and Ballard that truly shine.
