1965 - Jefferson Airplane debuts, The Beatles perform the first stadium concert in the history of rock (Shea Stadium) and Bob Dylan releases his influential album Highway 61 Revisited. Which is the path we're taking to get to our Throwback Thursday song.
On October 1, 1965, Bob Dylan appears at the legendary Carnegie Hall. His set was split between an acoustic set (including songs like "Mr. Tombourine Man" and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue") and a electric, full-band set (including songs like "Maggie's Farm" and "Like A Rolling Stone"). The band was made up of five ridiculously talented musicians called Levon & The Hawks.
In a short period of time, they will become known simply as...The Band.
Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Levon Helm would go on to release 10 studio albums, 2 albums with Bob Dylan and one of the most famous live albums (and concert films) ever, the box set The Last Waltz.
Today's track is taken from the film, and it wasn't easy to pick just one. "The Weight", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "The Shape I'm In" - Could have been any of them.
I went with "Up on Cripple Creek" - an easy going funky little number with hints of a New Orleans groove.
At the beginning of the concert film, the title card reads "This film should be played loud!"
So turn this one up.
