It was the fall of 1988 – I was fresh off my last summer before college. I unpacked my stuff and organized my dorm room, heading out to explore the campus of York College of Pennsylvania. As I entered the Student Union, I heard music filling the lobby. Music I had never heard before. I walked up to the second floor – following the music, as if it were the pied piper. I walked into WVYC, the college radio station of York College.
This would become a second home to me for the next five years. I made great friends, many of whom I am still very close with; I learned a lot about communications; and I discovered so much new music and bands and genres. My mind was blown!
The importance of college radio should not be lost on anyone. It gives a voice to students and artists and bands when commercial radio shied away for years.
This weekend, I head back to the second floor of the Student Union building to help celebrate the 45th anniversary of WVYC. I’ll be on the air from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM Saturday afternoon/evening with four of my very best friends.
We’ll spin some tunes, attempt some witty banter and reconnect – with each other and a medium that helped me survive college.
The radio station and the people that worked there was a new family. I learned so much about life and music. We laughed, we cried, we stayed up until the early morning listening to new music. It was special – It still is special.
Here are a few artists I discovered, thanks to WVYC: Billy Bragg, The Smiths, The Connells (who I celebrated my 21st birthday with in 1991), Sonic Youth, Living Colour, XTC, Cowboy Junkies and too many more to mention.
Want to listen? We’d love it if you did. Head to TuneIn.com and search for WVYC.
So cool. Great to reunite w folks line that. College radio is and has been very important, both to listeners and to the entire music industry.
