It's the final Throwback Thursday of 2020 and I'd like to thank all my dozens of readers for the follows, the feedback and the suggestions for Dave's Mixtape. It's been a bright spot for me in 2020 to create this blog and share my love of music with you all.
So now to the song - "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" - A song written back in 1947 by Frank Loesser (who also wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway musicals Guys and Dolls, How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying).
Although it is typically sung around the holidays, that was not necessarily what Loesser intended for the song. He saw the singer, madly in love, making a (possibly rash) commitment far into the future (see the lyrics: "Maybe it's much too early in the game. Ah, but I thought I'd ask you just the same--What are you doing New Year's, New Year's Eve?").
I find it warm and comforting and out of the many versions that have been recorded (Lena Horne, Harry Connick Jr. and Kacey Musgraves just to name a few), I always come back to Rufus Wainwright.
Enjoy it, soak it in, let's end this dumpster fire of a year and have a better 2021.
Much love to you all and I'll finish by asking the musical question...
What are you doing...New Year's Eve?
