This is becoming my favorite series within my blog. It’s time for round three of the Covers Mixtape. Round two was a lot of fun and you all had some great suggestions of other cover songs. Let’s jump right in with the Covers Pt. 3 Mixtape. Some highlights include:
“20th Century Boy” by Def Leppard
I didn’t hit on a lot of rock covers last time, so let’s kick off the latest mixtape with a pretty straight forward cover of the fantastic T-Rex song. It’s a bit more polished but still conveys the swagger of the original.
“Southern Man” by Merry Clayton
Known best for her duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones classic “Gimme Shelter”, Clayton delivers a staggeringly, powerful performance of Neil Young’s classic about racism in the American South with lyrics that touch on when the South will make amends for the fortunes built through slavery.
“All Apologies” by Sinead O’Connor
Released just months after Kurt Cobain’s death, O’Connor’s version is a spare and striking performance. She strips the grunge and hearing it again, shortly after O’Connor’s death is truly bittersweet.
“Heatwave” by The Jam
Off their fantastic fourth album, Setting Sons, The Jam kill it with their version of the Martha and the Vandellas Motown classic. The song is a fantastic melding of punk and soul and pays a beautiful tribute to the original. It’s certainly one to put on with these last few weeks of summer.
Dig deep into the mixtape for other great covers from artists like Toots & The Maytals, Seu Jorge, Rick Astley and many more! Enjoy!
