In 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as Women’s History Month. Since 1988, U.S. presidents have issued annual proclamations designating the month of March as Women’s History Month on occasion.
So what better reason to put my monthly mixtape together - than one called “Women Rule.” Now, it’s truly impossible to capture the wide range of artists and songs from female artists. So in honor of the year, 1987, when Congress designated the month, I created an 87 song mixtape. Full of powerful women, with powerful songs.
So check out "Women Rule" - Now, normally, I’d list out all the artists and song titles, but with 87 songs, I’ll throw out some highlights:
“Woman” by Kesha (feat. The Dap-Kings Horns)
Kesha told Rolling Stone Magazine that, “I just really love being a woman and I wanted an anthem for anyone else who wants to yell about being self-sufficient and strong.” There’s no better way to start off this mixtape than with this banger.
“None of Your Business” by Salt-N-Pepa
Described by one critic as “a fist-pumping, anti slut-shaming anthem. It is a war cry for women against the people and institutions that judge them for having sex, enjoying sex or expressing their sexuality with an I-do-not-give-a-shit attitude.”
“The Pill” by Loretta Lynn
The song tells a story of a wife who is upset about her husband getting her pregnant year after year, but is now happy because she can control her own reproductive choices. The song was banned by numerous radio stations but Lynn was also congratulated by a number of rural physicians because the song highlighted the availability of birth control in isolated, rural areas better than all the literature they had released.
“Woman” by Little Simz
The British rapper delivers a hell of a track that discusses women’s lives in different countries and is a thank you to women who inspire her, stating, “It’s empowering, it’s inspiring; I wanted to say thank you and I wanted to celebrate them.”
Take some time, dig into the mixtape, "Women Rule", enjoy it and let me know in the comments what artists or songs I missed.
