It was 34 years ago today that Michael Stipe sang these lyrics from the song "These Days" from the near-perfect R.E.M. album, "Lifes Rich Pageant". And it feels like we need these words today.
The album was a transitional one for R.E.M. that set the stage for future releases like "Document" and their step into true commercial success "Green".
Working with a new producer, Don Gehman, who primarily worked with John Cougar (Mellencamp), R.E.M. found a balance between the folk-like sound you'd hear on their previous releases and the arena-rock sound you'd not only hear on later releases, but in the direction they were heading live in concert. The focus musically turned up the volume on the strong rhythm section of Bill Berry and Mike Mills. Stipe, lyrically, touched on environmental crises and political malaise.
Side one (otherwise known as "Dinner side") contains my favorite R.E.M. song of all time, "These Days" - It's a jangly-rock mess of a powerful song that feels like the band's first true anthem. Right after this, you get "Fall On Me" - an absolute classic and shows the amazing collaborative vocals of Mills and Stipe.
Side two (otherwise known as "Supper side") has five originals and a cover of "Superman" with Mike Mills taking over lead vocals. One of my other favorite R.E.M. songs is "I Believe". Peter Buck's banjo playing at the start transitions beautifully into a joyful, hopeful southern-rock ditty. And if you need something to dance around to in the kitchen, while singing into your wooden spoon, throw on "Just a Touch".
"Life's Rich Pageant" bridged R.E.M. from the underground into the mainstream while remaining true to their quirkiness and thoughtfulness. Drop the needle on this masterpiece and play it loud.
