I woke up to the sad news that singer-songwriter Emitt Rhodes died yesterday.
For those not familiar with Rhodes, he broke onto the psychedelic scene in the 1960s but later pioneered the upbeat power-pop sound.
He was a phenom who wrote all his songs, played all the instruments, laid down all the vocal tracks and engineered his own sessions.
His melodic style has often been compared to Paul McCartney’s, and his home-recording approach was influential on generations of independent and lo-fi musicians.
He took an extended break from recording after legal disputes with his record label, instead producing other artists’ work until 2016, when he recorded another solo album, Rainbow Ends. It featured guest appearances from musicians who admired him including Aimee Mann, Richard Thompson, Jon Brion and more
My first introduction to Rhodes was his song "Lullabye" off The Royal Tenenbaums soundtrack.
I've created a mixtape of Rhodes best work along with a number of artists he influenced. Enjoy the mastery of his work.
