New Music Friday - 3/1/2024

It’s my birthday and the music industry has gifted me a bunch of great new music. Let’s not waste any time and get right into it - Here’s what I’m digging this week:

Lake Street Dive - “Good Together”

One of my favorite bands is back with a fun, funky track, the title track off of their upcoming album. It’s a joyful tune with some solid horns and, as always, fantastic vocals from Rachel Price (along with newest member Akie Bermiss. Akie gets a lot of love on this one, along with drummer Mike Calabrese with some solid playing from the outstanding bass player Bridget Kearney.

The Avett Brothers - “Love Of A Girl”

It’s a raucous track that brings The Avett Brothers back to their origins. Their upcoming album is their first since 2019. The first song is heavy on drums and electric guitars and with some solid production - they still find the agony of being in love a perfect theme. Produced by the fantastic Rick Rubin, the hope is that we’re looking at a dip back into the archives of the greatness of the band.

Kacey Musgraves - “Too Good to Be True”

Musgraves has certainly focused more on her past as well - with her latest track using acoustic guitars and clear, country-ish vocals to bring it home. If it sounds somewhat familiar, she interpolates singer-songwriter Anna Nalick’s 2005 hit “Breathe (2AM)”. It’s a song of uncertainty, yet her voice is so perfect, you’d want to believe that everything is alright.

Bully - “Atom Bomb”

Bully, the indie project from Alicia Bognanno, strips down the music but not the heartache and emotion in her latest song. Gone are the crunching guitars and what’s left are piano and some fierce vocals. The songs started more as a rock song, but the producer loved what he heard on the demo and stuck with it.

Lawrence Rothman - “LAX”

A beautifully painful song about Rothman dealing with their anorexia and the medical emergency it brought on. It’s Rothman being as vulnerable as anyone could be and they get help from the fantastic Amanda Shires (who Rothman has produced before). Looking forward to their full album coming out later this year.

The Crystal Casino Band - “Far Away”

Local faves TCCB are back with a cool new track with thumping drums and heavy bass guiding the fuzzy, loud guitars. It’s a cool throwback rock song that can help guide you into the world of TCCB, a band that should be looked into by everyone inside and outside the DMV.

St. Vincent - “Broken Man”

The new track from Annie Clark is self-described as “post-plague pop”. It’s off her upcoming album - the first she’s produced for herself. There’s an industrial-pop sound to the first single with a serious sounding Clark that builds to a spastic ending.

Real Estate - Daniel

One that I missed from last week but I’ve been really enjoying is the latest pop album from Real Estate. It’s an absolute throwback to their earlier days and the songs are strummy, catchy and bright. There are more acoustic guitars than they normally have - could be due to producer Daniel Tashian (who has worked with Kacey Musgraves) - but the tracks remind me why I fell in love with this band years ago. Highlights include “Haunted World”, “Water Underground” and “Say No More”.

Hurray For the Riff Raff - The Past Is Still Alive

Another one that I missed from last month was the latest from the fantastic band led by Alynda Segarra. It’s a return to their earlier work, with a folksier side and a theme of feeling doomed but finding a will to keep on keeping on. There’s an edginess to their lyrics - desperation and love run throughout. Highlights include “Alibi”, “Vetiver” and “The World Is Dangerous”.

Brittany Davis - Image Issues

Who is Brittany Davis? Well, the Black, non-binary and blind musician has been drawing praise from all over the country for their music, including Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard. Their new album tackles the issues that Davis lives with and who they are - combining R&B, rap and the energy of rock and roll. It’s fierce, it’s different and it’s something that needs your attention. Highlights include “So Fly” and “Sepricon”.

Daniel Romano’s Outfit - Too Hot To Sleep

New to me, Daniel Romano’s Outfit has a classic 70s power-pop sound. The Canadian band has real energy in their songs with shimmering guitars and tight drums. Reminds me a bit of The Knack and some Big Star. Highlights include “Where’s Paradise” and “Field of Ruins”.
