Today's featured CD that I found in the bins under the bed is a special one, especially today on the day we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.
Sam Cooke's Night Beat is the 10th album from the soul singer and arguably, his best.
Most people know Cooke from songs such as "A Change is Gonna Come" and "Wonderful World". This release is quite different.
The idea behind Night Beat was to record some of his favorite songs, particularly songs with blues and gospel flavors, backed by a small combo (including 16-year old Billy Preston on keyboards). The result is nothing short of brilliant.
Cooke sings his heart out on these songs that give off a 2:00 am last-call sort of feeling. The emotions run deep on the tracks and Cooke brings a spiritual intensity that builds from the opener "Los and Lookin'" to the closer, the upbeat "Shake Rattle and Roll".
Sadly, a year after Night Beat was released, Cooke was shot to death at a Los Angeles hotel. He was only 33 years old.
The argument will go on forever - who was the greatest male soul singer. Otis Redding? Wilson Pickett? Marvin Gaye?
My choice always and forever is Sam Cooke.
