Covers - Pt. 4

Welcome back to the world famous Covers Mixtape - Part 4! I’ve gathered a complex mix of styles, songs and artists that blend so well and bend the originality of each song. Let’s jump right in with the Covers Pt. 4 Mixtape. Some highlights include:

“Let’s Spend the Night Together” by Muddy Waters

A classic rock song from the Rolling Stones, Waters sinks deeper into the already grooviness of the original and adds in a dirty blues element. It’s got the signature guitar sound of Waters and is a great way to start off this mixtape.

“Magic” by Juliana Hatfield

Juliana Hatfield has been releasing cover albums as of late including ones for The Police and most recently ELO. Her album of Olivia Newton-John songs was, well, magical. It captures the shine of pop music in the late 1970s/early 1980s from the original song, adding in just enough grit from Hatfield’s original music.

“Someone Like You” by Dan Wilson

Dan Wilson is the lead singer of Semisonic but has written/co-written so many songs for artists like The Chicks, Bruno Mars and Adele. The cover of one of her biggest hits takes it to another level of sadness. Wilson’s voice conveys the pain in a very different way from Adele. The addition of The Kronos Quartet adds some deeper meaning musically.

“Hit ‘Em Up Style” by Carolina Chocolate Drops

The original pop track by Blu Cantrell hit number two on the Billboard pop chart but I could listen to this cover of it by the American old-time string band Carolina Chocolate Drops, led by the incredible Rhiannon Giddens, over and over again. It’s like you’re sitting on the front porch in 90 degree heat, sipping some lemonade. The fiddle version keeps the bitter feelings of a scorned woman.

Take the time to discover the other fantastic covers on this Mixtape from such artists as Joe Jackson, Candi Staton, Soul Asylum and many more. Enjoy!
