Brand New Heavies - I Own That Vinyl!

Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1 by The Brand New Heavies is a masterful fusion of funk, soul, and hip-hop that showcases the band's versatility and innovation. Released in 1992, this album was ahead of its time, blending the smooth grooves of acid jazz with the raw energy of rap vocals. With Record Store Day happening later this month, I thought I’d dip into something I bought at a previous one, so The Brand New Heavies are today’s feature on I Own That Vinyl!

The British band formed in the mid-80s and were a part of London’s acid jazz scene before heading to the states to bring their soulful, vintage groove to us. One of the standout elements of this album is its seamless collaboration with hip-hop artists. The Heavies effortlessly blend their live instrumentation with the gritty flow of MCs like Gang Starr and Main Source, creating a dynamic synergy that elevates the music to new heights. Tracks like "Bonafide Funk" featuring Main Source exemplify this synergy, with tight rhymes layered over funky basslines and vibrant horn sections. Then there’s the infectious rhythms of tracks like "Jump N' Move" featuring Jamalski and “It’s Gettin' Hectic” featuring Gang Star. Each song delivers a unique sonic experience that keeps listeners engaged from start to finish.

The production on Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1 is top-notch, with crisp beats and lush arrangements that complement the band's tight musicianship. Each instrument occupies its own space in the mix, allowing every element to shine while still contributing to the album's cohesive sound. Whether it's the funky guitar licks on "Bonafide Funk" or the soulful keys on "Wake Me When I'm Dead," every detail is carefully crafted to create a rich auditory experience.

Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1 is a timeless classic that showcases The Brand New Heavies at the peak of their creative powers. With its infectious grooves, stellar collaborations, and impeccable production, this album remains a testament to the band's influence on the fusion of jazz, funk, and hip-hop. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to their music, this album is essential listening for anyone who appreciates innovative and soulful music and you can borrow my copy if you’d like.
